On Being Disconnected From the Social Media Engine

Before I left Toronto I thought it would be very hard being away from tweeting, blogging and all my other social networks, including blogging. To my delight it hasn’t been that difficult at all. I’ve had none of the withdrawal symptoms I thought I’d had, and I honestly had no inclination to tweet ( going to lunch, meeting family, on the train, etc). In fact, I think the break has been good. I’ve met up with people I’d talked to via email and telephone… and was reminded again that there is nothing quite like being with people, chatting about projects, sharing and actually being able to hear and feel the laughter.

Having said that,  I am still keeping my Facebook status updated… (going to lunch, lovely day in London, going dancing, having a latte, beautiful weather etc) so I am not entirely away from my social networks. Interestingly, because I use Twitter for work/professional and Facebook for personal when it comes to updating on holidays, Facebook wins hands down for personal updates. All my friends do the same so it doesn’t feel strange. Whereas on Twitter I’d always suspect I’d be boring people with my holiday updates.

Having said all this, it’s only been a few days. A few days is good, and, as we say across the pond, a change is as good as a rest. I’m pretty sure permanent disconnection probably would not be good for me. Luckily that’s not something I have to worry about.

Top 4 Sites for SMBs Navigating Social Media

Top 4 Sites for SMBs Navigating Social Media

I found this post some time back (the power of social bookmarking) and I think Small Businesses will find it particularly useful. As the writer says, no matter how much it’s drummed into you that Social Media is “where it’s at”, and “you’ve got to be in it to win at it”, the fact remains you are very busy and making the most of Social networking and social media is very time consuming. It becomes even more so if you want to find customers. However, by choosing your networks and sites and having a clear idea of what you want to achieve it’s possible to have some great success.

The sites are

Yahoo Answers

Twitter

Wordpress

Flickr

While I wouldn’t call Wordpress a social media site per se, I agree with the reason it was included.  it has been very successful for me and I love it. Linked In has been a formerly rather neglected surprise… and I have a plan to include Yahoo Answers. Flickr is still my personal photo-sharing place and I know YouTube is also part of my plan. For establishing connections and relationships this list is hard to beat, and at the very least these for sites (and the other notable mentions) are excellent starting points for  Small Businesses.

So have a read and share what you think, by leaving a comment. If you have another site you’ve had success with share it by leaving a comment below.
