Then be sure to pop in and visit my first solo photography show at Toronto’s Carlton Lounge, and take a super-realistic photographic journey through a few of Toronto’s well-known neighbourhoods. From Leslievill to the Waterfront, you may discover a Toronto you didn’t know existed and some aspects of this great city that you’ve taken for granted.

My mission is to tell my story and connect us all to stories, discoveries and memories of Toronto – connections to places we live… What better way to achieve this by creating artwork that reflects my story and presenting it for you to see? I’ve selected 14 prints featuring Toronto neighbourhoods and two featuring London England, and I’ve had some fabulous feedback.
There is one thing (at least) that I can say with certainty and it’s this: looking at art as pixels on a screen, even though large, is a far cry from seeing them presented, framed on a gallery wall. There is no comparison. When you see art “live” you can interact with it, let it speak to you. On a screen…. well, let’s just say it’s better in person. I truly believe art is meant to be experienced in person. My photography show has given me a deeper appreciation for my craft and how people experience it and ideas for how I can fulfill my creative purpose and mission. That is going to lead to more good things (and yes more shows!)

So, make it a point to go and see an art show. Any art show. Yes, it’s summer and most of us want to be out and about in the sunshine, however why not pop into a cool art gallery and contemplate some art? You won’t regret it. And us artists will thank you.

I am happy to say my solo photography show is still on and will run throughout July until August 4th 2015.

I hope you like my  artistic photograph this week 😉 It’s one I took some time ago of the Toronto Skyline.  Usually we see the skyline from a distance, and I have taken many shots than encompass the entire Toronto Skyline. I like to change things up though and I find the Skyline even more fascinating up-front and close up and personal.  I wanted to emphasize a general moodiness (although on the actual day it was bright sunlight) so I gave it some dark overtones. Many of the buildings along the waterfront are blue or green, particularly the newer ones… in keeping with the rather nautical theme of the lake. For this shot, I was in a particular place… can you guess where? Well done if you do.

If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll understand when I say that August has been the most amazing month for my art photography. At the beginning of August I joined Toronto’s Arts Market as a vendor, meaning I now have my own art  gallery space to showcase and sell my photography. In the weeks since then I have  painted my new space, making it mine, and have had fun choosing which art prints to display. I’ve travelled far and wide sourcing unique picture frames, have matted and framed the first group of art photography prints for display and developed a whole new skill – framing my art. Choosing which ones to print and what treatments would bring out their particular uniqueness the best was a lot of fun, and I’ve learned to critically assess my work from the additional perspective of the end result matted and framed, as well as framing the initial photograph. It was my love of reading and of The Beatles that inspired me to take and name this photograph Paperback Writer - Photography by Nicky Jameson, Fine Artist, Photographer and add it to my portfolio of fine art prints. Although I’m now a Torontonian, I was born and grew up in Britain and, as a Brit I fell in love with the MerseyBeat sounds of John, Paul, George & Ringo.

I’m sure most people have heard the Beatles’ song “Paperback Writer” – it was a number one on both sides of the pond after all – but I wonder how many people know the interesting story behind it, and how it merits a special place in the history of music?

The song was recorded in the summer of 1966, and was written by Paul McCartney. It was inspired by one of McCartney’s aunts, who complained to him that every song the Beatles had recorded so far was about love – as were nearly 99 percent of songs recorded by all artists at the time – and asked if he could write about something else. McCartney took up the challenge. The first thing he noticed after learning of his aunt’s request was Ringo reading a book, so that’s the subject he chose. The song takes the form of a letter being written by an aspiring author to a publisher, and features a reference to John Lennon’s favourite poet, Edward Lear.

This song was also important to the Beatles as it was the first to acknowledge the burgeoning influence of Indian music on the Beatles’ sound, as it written basically with one chord. It was also the first where they were allowed to virtually create whatever they wished to create, it being the first time their management team of Brian Epstein and George Martin has allowed them free reign.

I’ve always loved books as much as I love The Beatles. I like the way you can tell so much about a person simply by having a quick scan of their bookcase. It’s not just the titles as well. If the spines of their books are cracked and creased, you know the books are there because they have been read and loved. If they all look perfect, perhaps they are there just for show. If they’re arranged in alphabetical order, you can guess the owner has a meticulous personality. If they’re haphazardly arranged as if they’ve just been thrown at the shelves, perhaps that indicates a fun-loving person who hasn’t time for order and routine. Of course I may be talking complete rubbish, but it’s fun to speculate!

As a creative person myself, I love the way this art photograph marries three creative arts at once – music, literature and photography. I also love the way the hardback books and larger volumes are arranged on the top shelf and they don’t quite just fit on. I feel it gives the photograph just that little edge of tension and menace. I also love the way it’s a slight diversion for me, away from my usual choices of buildings and architecture, and I’m proud to offer it to buyers of fine art prints online.
