The Gherkin, 30 St Mary Axe London

London Architecture – The Gherkin, 30 St Mary Axe

Is there a building more beautiful than the Gherkin? Maybe, but my visits home in London would seem incomplete without visiting my favourite building.

Also known previously as the Swiss Re building, and located at 30 St Mary Axe, after the church that once stood on the grounds, the Gherkin, or 30 St Mary Axe  as it is fondly known is an architectural wonder and as an urban architecture photographer I don’t seem to be able to get enough of photographing it.

I have been to it twice already this trip because the first time the light was a bit “iffy” (it was overcast) and I wanted to get some better lighting conditions, which we had today. Incidentally I also took a whole lot of photos of the Lloyd’s Building as well as as the just finished, but not yet occupied Leadenhall Building (also known as the Cheese Grater because of its unusual shape), two other architecture wonders of the London Skyline. I am looking forward to having a print of the Gherkin on my wall as part of my London collection, something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time. This blog was written on the fly with a photo taken with my Galaxy Note 3 – so I’ll add to it at some point with a bit of the history of the building and the architectural design.
