Every so often I like to change it up and do something different, still of vibrant London artwork, textured, decidedly edgier and this art called Night Bus came about through my usual art of experimentation and returning to a piece I’d left for a while because my first attempts didn’t come together. That often happens and it’s kind of miraculous how leaving and coming back to the piece unblocks the channel. I have memories of taking the night bus home on a few occasions – now there is a night tube it’s not as big a deal, but taking the night bus because you’ve missed the last tube is quite the adventure. It’s where you see an entirely different London from the daytime and on a vehicle where you’d swear it was going to have a major road accident they drive so fast.
I hadn’t done a night art piece in ages. Because it’s hard to paint them, very challenging to do so I was very pleased when Night Bus came together and it riffed on my story of being near Bank and Lombard street and taking the photo for this artwork. I actually created two versions and liked this one the best. Of course I had no idea this is what I’d do with it. Only an inkling a bus a perspective. And people. But it all worked. I love the energy – which is the energy I always feel when I’m home.
